Beware of Corn Tortillas

I think I ate gluten for lunch today =(.  We tried out a new place called Fin’s Mexican Eatery.  I ordered a steak taco and a carnitas taco on corn tortillas.  This is my usual order when I go to Mexican, since I know the meat will probably be safe, and most of the time I don’t have a problem with the corn tortillas.  I noticed these corn tortillas though had sort of a different texture then usual, a little more fluffy.  They also didn’t have as strong of a corn taste.  For a brief moment, I thought maybe they included wheat, but the tacos tasted too delicious, so I tried not to worry about it.

Sure enough, an hour after I ate, my head started to hurt.  Those tacos definitely were not worth spending the rest of the day in bed! I should have trusted my instinct.  At the time, I didn’t want to make it a big deal. I figured if I asked the cook if they contained wheat, he probably would have told me no anyways (since they are “corn” tortillas).  A lot of people have no idea what gluten is, and don’t know how much of an issue a little wheat in a corn tortilla can be.

I like buying Mission corn tortillas at home because they say right on the package “gluten free”.  La Fe corn tortillas are also good.  The only ingredients are corn, water, and lime. No preservatives or anything!

So just a reminder, be careful ordering corn tortillas when eating out!  Sometimes there is no way of knowing if they contain gluten or not.

Oh no!! Sorry to hear that! I know what that’s like to feel like maybe you should stop eating something because you’ll pay for it later but it tastes SO good!!! Ah!!! Hope you feel better soon!

    • Yeah, I have to remind myself of how horrible I’ll feel later and just stop eating, haha! Sometimes you have no way of knowing though. And thanks, I am feeling a little better now =).

Brutal! That sucks. I hope you’re feeling better now!
I had a similar experience to you – when I was in a restaurant in Houston (my work sent me there on a course) I asked the server whether some chicken dish had breading on it and he said no, so I ordered it. It turned out that it was breaded and fried, so obviously the guy had no idea what the heck I was talking about. Live and learn, hey? Now I’m very spastic about letting the server know that I have a gluten allergy and usually end up asking them what I can eat from the menu before really looking at it.
